- - Which at summer your first contact with the mastiff? 1966
I was not brought up with dogs my family never having one, and in fact I was rather frightened of them. So it was not until after we were married I found out what I had been missing. Chris’s family had always had dogs and his mother had bred cockers and Bedlington’s and he knew just the breed he wanted - Mastiffs, I was somewhat taken aback when I saw just what he was referring to, I rather fancied a daxie, something I have since reconciled.
- Quel a été votre premier contact avec le mastiff ? 1966
Je n'ai pas été élevé avec des chiens dans ma famille on n'en a jamais eu un, et en fait j'avais plutôt peur d'eux. Alors il a fallu attendre après notre mariage, j'ai découvert que j'avais été absent. La famille de Chris avait toujours eu des chiens et sa mère avait élevé cockers et de Bedlington, et il savait exactement la race qu'il voulait - MASTIFF, j'ai été quelque peu surpris quand j'ai vu à quoi il faisait allusion, j'ai plutôt imaginé une Daxie, quelque chose qui m'a depuis réconciliés.



- What attracted you at the mastiff? Chris choice
Our first attempts of finding a mastiff failed miserably, and we settled for a bullmastiff, sadly she only had a short life thanks to Betty Baxter Chris managed to locate a mastiff President of Shute ‘Titch’ and I went off and got another bullmastiff, the 2 boys got on very well just 6 weeks between them, the mastiff was typical very aloof whilst Red the bullmastiff craved attention which he got plenty of as we ran an ‘Inn’ at the time.
The bullmastiff, was the first dog we showed and won best puppy dog at the Southern Branch Bullmastiff Show.
That was it, the show bug bit. Little did I realise when that puppy arrived how much our lives would change. It had never been our intention to show or breed and if it hadn’t been for the local training club we joined, we may never have done so, they were so enthusiastic about our two that we drifted in to it, and at one of the early open shows we entered we won five firsts in variety classes and reserve best in show with President of Shute. We were hooked!
He was in demand at stud and though he never made it to the upper house he left his mark on the breed winning the progeny award twice.

Nos premières tentatives de trouver un mastiff a lamentablement échoué, et nous avons choisi un bullmastiff, malheureusement elle n'avait que une vie courte. merci à Betty Baxter Chris a réussi à trouver un mastiff President of Shute ‘Titch’ et je suis sorti et a obtenu une autre bullmastiff, les 2 garçons s'entendaient très bien, seulement 6 semaines entre eux, le Mastiff était typique, très distant tout rouge. le Bullmastiff aspirait l'attention qu'il a obtenu beaucoup de titre. nous avons eu un «Inn» à l'époque.
Le bullmastiff, a été le premier chien, que nous avons montré en expo et qui a gagné le meilleur puppy au Southern Branch Bullmastiff Show. Cela était-il, le bit bug show. Je ne savais pas quand ce chiot est arrivé combien notre vie allait changer. Cela n'avait jamais été notre intention de montrer ou de reproduire et si elle n'avait pas été au club entraînement locales que nous rejoint, nous n'ayons jamais fait, ils étaient si enthousiastes au sujet de nos deux chiens, que nous avons dérivé vers cela, et à l'une des premières expositions que nous avons faite Nous avons remporté les premières places dans 5 classes
et la reserve de best in show avec President of Shute. Nous avons été conquis.

By 1974 we had a son and daughter sired by him from 2 different dams both gained their titles we mated Ch Oven Ready of Bulliff to The Devil from Wayside an American import who did a lot for the breed even if he had some impure lines, find me a mastiff that doesn’t

En 1974, nous avons eu un fils et une fille engendré par lui à partir de 2 femelles différentes qui ont gagné leurs titres, nous avons accouplés Ch Oven Ready of Bulliff au The Devil from Waysid un mastiff importé d' amérique qui a fait beaucoup pour la race, même s'il avait quelques lignes impur, trouver des moi un Mastiff qui ne le soit pas

- Which are paramount qualities according to you which the mastiff must have?
Type health soundness and temperament

- what is your opinion on the evolution of mastiffs, since you started breeding.
When we came into the breed 1970, showing was starting to take off, it is well documented how thin on the ground the breed had been. There were some quality dogs that come to mind but there were also some very poor quality.
I have always felt we were very lucky to come into the breed when we did, so many improvements over the years, sadly in my opinion the breed in the UK has taken a dip for the worse, hopefully this is only temporary.
It grieves me that there has been so much very close breeding and we now have a situation when with no thought at all our breed is being used as a group and throughout the world we have odd and strange mongrels being bred from ‘mastiff types’

- Quelle est votre opinion sur l'évolution des mastiffs, depuis que vous avez commencé l'élevage.
Quand nous sommes arrivés dans la race 1970, les expositions commençaient à décoller, c'etait bien documenté la manière dont la race devait etre. Il y avait quelques chiens de qualité qui viennent à l'esprit mais il y avait également certains de très mauvaise qualité. J'ai toujours su que nous étions très chanceux de venir dans la race quand nous l' avons fait, beaucoup d' améliorations ont été faites au cours des années, malheureusement, à mon avis la race en Grande-Bretagne a pris un plongeon pour le pire, j'espère que ce n'est que temporaire. Il m'attriste qu'il y a eu tellement d'élevage très fermé et nous avons maintenant une situation où sans penser du tout à notre race. il est utilisée à travers le monde, des bâtards bizarre et étrange sélectionnées à partir de «types Mastiff»

- Do you think there is a problem of interpretation of the breed standard, as we see in show of mastiff that does not look like those you produce.?
The interpretation of the standard is really in the eye of the reader, none of us see things exactly the same, this tends to bring out the worst in some people, sadly I think breeders and judges read it once and then forget it. A good judge should have a picture of what the desired end product should look like, natural handling is important and what we call ‘stringing’ up not desirable. Most countries follow the UK standard which for a British breed this is correct. The world over there are good and bad and with the current changes being made by our KC with little consultation with breed owners, who knows what they will look like in a few years especially as there are so many ‘crosses’ about who could get into the gene pool.
I no longer get to shows but follow the breed as closely as I can, some mastiffs with narrow fronts slab sided no padding in the cheeks are winning but the present costs of showing it is going to be those who can afford it are showing and not the best ones winning.
- Pensez-vous qu'il ya un problème d'interprétation du standard de la race, comme nous le voyons dans le spectacle de Mastiff qui ne ressemble pas à ceux que vous produisez. ?
L'interprétation du standard est vraiment dans l'oeil du lecteur, aucun de nous voyons les choses exactement pareil, ce qui tend à faire ressortir le pire chez certaines personnes, malheureusement je pense que les éleveurs et les juges le lisent une fois et puis qu'on oublie. Un bon juge doit avoir une image de ce à quoi le produit final souhaité doit ressembler, le mouvement naturel est important et ce que nous appelons «stringing’» n' est pas souhaitable. La plupart des pays suivent la norme britannique ce qui, pour une race britannique est normal. Dans le monde entier il ya des bonnes et mauvaises choses et avec les changements actuels déployés par nos KC sans consultation avec les propriétaires de la race, qui sait à quoi 'ils vont ressembler dans quelques années en particulier, car il ya trop de «croisements» pour savoir qui devrait entrer dans le pool génétique.
Je ne participe plus aux expositions, mais je suis la race d'aussi près que je peux, certains mastiffs avec le front étroit, sans rembourrage dans les joues sont gagnants, mais avec les coûts actuels pour participer aux exposition cela va être ceux qui peuvent se le permettre qui seront gagnants et pas les meilleurs .

J'ai écrit ceci il ya quelques années et je pense qu'il s'applique toujours
J'insiste toujours avec les gens qui achete dans le cas où ils ont à se séparer du chiot à n'importe quel âge, il nous revient.
